Collectivization Stalin Soviet Poster 1989

Translation: Collectivisation 1929

(The inside of the sickle has Stalin's profile)

Collectivization in the Soviet Union was a policy pursued under Stalin, between 1928 and 1940, consolidating individual land and labour intocollective farms. The Soviet leadership was confident that thereplacement of individual peasant farms would immediately increase foodsupplies for the urban population, the supply of raw materials forthe processing industry, and agricultural exports generally. In the early1930s over 90% of agricultural land was "collectivized" as ruralhouseholds entered collective farms with their land, livestock and otherassets. The sweeping collectivization often involved tremendous humanand social costs while the issue of economic advantages of collectivefarms remains largely undecided.
