The Illiterate Is Blind : Soviet Poster 1920

Translation: The Illiterate Is Blind - Everywhere he Expects Failure and Misfortune. 


After the 1917 October Lenin issued an edict "Eradicate illiteracy amongst the population of the USSR ". The entire population from 8 years to 50 who are not able to read and write , must study to read and to write in their mothertongue or Russian language . Those doing it, had their workday shortened by 2 hours and full salary. Those who didn't study -went to prison.

Artist:Alexei Alexandrovich Radakov (1877, Moscow - 1942, Tbilisi). He created a lot of caricatures, grotesques for newspapers and magazines, many posters and drawings. After the Revolution in 1917 he mounted performances, in 1919 published magazine "Galchonok" for children. He received the glory of satirist - poet.
