In basis of the movie is a recital of revolt on an ironclad "Count Potemkin" in 1905 . The people of Odessa supported the revolt of sailors, that resulted in the bloody shooting of a crowd by the Tsar's troops.

The Premiere of the film took place in January 1926 at the First National Movie Theatre (now Hudozhestveny)

The Battleship Potemkin has been called one of the most influential propaganda films of all time , and was named the greatest film of all time at the World's Fair at Brussels, Belgium, in 1958.
